As an Asian-American raised in a totally occidental culture, I was inherently drawn to Asian aesthetics. My first 'artistic' pursuits were the studies of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy and painting. This consisted of copying, copying, copying.... steles, engravings, and manuscripts of ancient masters and of a modern master, my sensei, Yoshiyasu Fuji. I developed a love and appreciation for the simple yet powerful line.
I was fascinated immediately by fused glass upon first seeing it and understanding what it was. I had found my medium.
So coming rather late in life, as I am, to creative expression, I do so from the viewpoint of the critical observer. 'Art for art's sake' definitely doesn't apply to me. Glass, to me, is elemental; a living cohesion of earth and fire brought to a restful state. Yet it retains all of it's potential for organic movement and metamorphosis. This is what I attempt to convey to the observer... peace within change.
While crafting each piece, I keep the observer in mind with the wish that it will bestow enjoyment, satisfaction and a degree of tranquility to the owner.
